    Less is More

Just the right number to fit around four trestle tables as one huge family dining table. An earlier ceremony leaves plenty of time for dancing — anyone who has enjoyed après-ski knows dancing in the afternoon is great fun.

Prices from the 2026/27 brochure: venue hire only, for weddings up to the end of 2027, subject to contract. Fridays and Sundays aren’t listed — ask the team. Bank-holiday Less is More and Beyond the Moon weddings may pop back the next morning to collect decorations and presents.

A day at The Pilgrims Rest

From nine in the morning to carriages.

One possible running order for a Less is More wedding, straight from the brochure. Later ceremony? Add a couple of hours to each time.

  1. 09:00

    The house is yours

Both dressing rooms are ready, fires lit. Caterers lay the tables while you have three hours for hair, make-up and a glass of bubbly.

  2. 11:30

    Guests arrive

Through the cottage garden, under the gaze of the Abbey gatehouse.

  3. 12:00

    The ceremony

Vows in the Great Hall, on benches dressed in fur or boho rugs.

  4. 12:30

    Confetti & photographs

In the front garden — or, by arrangement with English Heritage, in the Abbey ruins next door.

  5. 13:00

    Drinks reception

In the gardens when the sun shines, by the fire in the Webster Bar when the heavens open — it is England after all.

  6. 14:00

    Lunch & speeches

At the long trestle tables of the Dining Room, candles lit, decanters out.

  7. 16:00

    Cake & first dance

Cut the cake, then the Great Hall becomes the dance floor.

  8. 20:45

    Wave-off

Guests send you off; family leave with the decorations. On a Bells & Whistles day you dance on until carriages at 11.30 pm.

Pet friendly

Some of our nearest and dearest have more legs than others. Well-behaved (clean) dogs are welcome — one couple’s golden retriever was the ring bearer.

Elopements

Planning something smaller? Midweek elopements are what the house does beautifully — ask for the elopement brochure.

Your own drinks

A Pimm’s or gin station, your own wine, a bar company — never any corkage, and no mark-ups on catering or drinks.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

  • Yes. There are no fixed suppliers and no corkage, ever. Choose from the team’s Tried, Tested and Trusted list (they take no commission from it) or bring anyone you like — fully catered, DIY or anything in between.

  • Everything you see, touch or sit on when you visit: furniture, rugs, candles, firewood, decanters, garden furniture, the seasonal look and loans from the Aladdin’s Cave. A member of the team is first on site and last to leave.

  • Up to 50 for the ceremony and dining, and up to 90 in total for the evening on a Bells & Whistles day. Less is More is for up to 30, Beyond the Moon up to 50.

  • Yes — inglenook fires in the Great Hall, the Dining Room and the Webster Bar, lit by the team with wood provided. Real candles are allowed on the Dining Room tables and in the Webster Bar; the chandeliers take safety candles.

  • By separate arrangement with English Heritage, and for a small charge, you can be photographed in the Abbey ruins, escorted by a member of their staff. There is also a walled lane leading to a field — complete with sunset.

  • Not on site. Hotels, B&Bs and Airbnbs are a short walk away in Battle, some with parking, so nobody needs a taxi.

  • Some of our nearest and dearest have more legs than others. Well-behaved (clean) dogs are welcome — ask the team.

  • Music ends at 11 pm, carriages at 11.30 pm and the house is vacated by midnight.
